Abhiskeh Gubta is a 26 year old Indian artist. Although Abhishek was born with cerebral palsy, he is determined to live a full and joyful life. He loves to paint, ride his bike, play with technology and help around the house. 

 

Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition which develops during gestation in the womb. According to recent estimates there are roughly eighteen million people living with cerebral palsy across the world. Individuals with cerebral palsy suffer from impairments to their motor skills and intellectual development. Most people with the condition are unable to look after themselves, and are unable to live what would be considered to be a normal life. Abhishek himself suffers from intellectual limitations which make it difficult for him to communicate with his family and with the world around him.

 

Abhi has faced many setbacks in life, but he has also achieved so much. Despite the difficulties which Abhishek faces, he is determined to live his life as fully and joyfully as he can. Painting has become a crucial tool for Abhishek, allowing him to express himself in ways that he never was able to before. Abhishek only began painting during 2020 during the Covid Pandemic. Despite being so new to art, Abhi has taken to the craft like a duck to water. His family were amazed to see the skill, intuition and passion that flowed so naturally out of Abhishek. They were also overjoyed to see the contentment which painting has brought to him. Now, Abhi can show people how he experiences the world. He can connect and share with others. Though Abhishek can not always do everything the same way as everyone else he has undeniably achieved so much by teaching himself how to paint, and in finding a way to open up without words.

 

Abhishek has shown the world that he can do way more than what was expected of him. Really, Abhishek (like everyone else who suffers from cerebral palsy) just wants acceptance, love and respect. Sadly these things are often hard for sufferers of cerebral palsy to come by. More often than not, individuals with cerebral palsy are treated as inferior and incapable by society at large. They are judged and disrespected, rather than nurtured and encouraged. Society, unfortunately, expects people to fit into certain molds and often leaves those who do not make the cut behind. Ultimately, this is a very inhumane way of treating people- and it means that there are so many

sufferers of intellectual disabilities who are never given the chance to discover their purpose in life.

 People with cerebral palsy, just like Abhishek, have the capacity to thrive given patience, time and a lot of love. There are a lot of special people out there in the world who just haven’t been shown, or who haven’t figured out, how to express themselves yet.  These people have a unique perspective on life which could teach the rest of us a lot. Abhishek’s family hope that by sharing his story and his art with the world that they can encourage other people like him to find joy and fulfillment through art. They hope that Abhi’s incredible fortitude and creativity can

show individuals with cerebral palsy that they are able to achieve so much in this life, even if others don’t expect much from them. Abhishek has certainly already proven a lot of people wrong. 

 

Abhishek paintings draw on his experiences of the natural world and of his own inner emotional domain. Evocative, skillful and beautiful- his work catches the eye, and keeps it there. Abhishek’s capacity to play with color is simply stunning. Though his palette varies across his works, his ability to produce harmonious, magical color schemes never falters. Then there are Abhishek’s brushstrokes, which are wonderfully expressive and bold. Simply, it is undeniable that Abhishek Gupta is a painter who is singular and unique.
